THE BEGINNING
Why Land Roamer exists
Freedom: deciding for yourself where you sleep, how long you stay and which road you take. That’s why Land Roamer exists.
Jerry and Anniek like to travel as freely as possible: self-sufficient, off-grid, with no fixed route. For their dream trip, a whole year through South America, they went looking for the perfect 4×4 overland camper. They couldn’t find it. What they saw was either compact and light but completely soulless, or full of character but quickly turning into a bulky truck. With the right choice of materials, it turned out you could have both: compact and light, yet tough and overland-ready, with an interior that feels like home.
Jerry had built campers himself before, so this had to work. But after plenty of setbacks, extra costs and lessons learned the hard way, the result was a warm, cosy camper that drove well, but it stayed exactly that: a self-build. Not the starting point for a brand they could stand behind.
To do it really well, Jerry decided to take it seriously. By trade he’s an architectural draughtsman, used to thinking about how spaces feel and how things are built. But designing a camper cabin called for a whole different skill: a new 3D design program, which he had to learn from scratch with the help of a mentor, alongside his day job as an architectural designer.
Only then did the actual development start: more than 1,000 hours, on top of learning that new skill. Prototype after prototype, designing inside and outside at the same time, until the Pioneer was born. It was such a success that Jerry and Anniek decided to turn it into a company: Land Roamer.
Jerry Zomer
Jerry designs the cabins down to the last detail, from the first sketch to the finished 3D drawing. By trade he’s an architectural draughtsman; that background in space and construction shows in everything he makes.
Anniek de Jager
Anniek is involved at every stage, from choosing materials to the final finish, and makes sure the result feels as good as it works. In daily life she’s a doctor working on her PhD; whenever she’s free, she’d rather hit the road in the camper with Jerry and their little dog Mayla.
PHILOSOPHY
A cosy little home, with no compromises on terrain
Land Roamer should feel like a warm home, with all the luxury that’s possible — without ever taking anything away from the 4×4 handling of the base vehicle. We want to be able to go everywhere a pick-up with a roof tent and full overland kit can go, but with your own cosy space on board.
That only works if you design inside and outside at the same time. We shaped the cabin around the interior that had to fit in it, and designed the interior around the dimensions of the vehicle. That way the cabin stays as wide as the base vehicle, the centre of gravity stays low and between the axles, and the balance on the road is kept.
DEVELOPMENT & TESTING
Almost 5 years of testing, from prototype to Pioneer
The current design is the result of countless prototypes and lots of testing: on dirt roads, in adventure and enduro parks, and over long distances on the road.
The ultimate test was a 13-month trip through South America. From minus 10°C to 40°C, river crossings, beaches, salt, desert and endless washboard roads: the Pioneer handled it all.
