THE BEGINNING
Why Land Roamer exists
Freedom: deciding for yourself where you sleep, how long you stay, and which road you take. That’s why Land Roamer exists.
Jerry and Anniek like to travel as freely as possible: self-sufficient, off-grid, without a fixed route. For their dream trip, a year through South America, they went looking for the perfect 4×4 overland camper. They couldn’t find it. What they saw was either compact and light but completely soulless, or full of atmosphere but quickly turning into a bulky truck. With the right choice of materials, it turned out both were possible: compact and light, yet rugged and overland-worthy, with an interior that feels like home.
Jerry had already built campers himself before, so this had to work. But after plenty of setbacks, extra costs and lessons learned the hard way, what came out was a warm, cosy camper that drove well — but it stayed exactly that: a self-build. Not the foundation for a brand they could stand behind.
To do it properly, Jerry decided to approach it seriously. By trade he’s an architectural draftsman, used to thinking about spatial experience and engineering. But designing a camper cabin called for an entirely different discipline: a new 3D design package, which he had to learn from scratch under the guidance of a mentor, separate from his day job as an architectural designer.
Only then did the real development begin: more than 1,000 hours, on top of learning that new discipline. From prototype to prototype, designing inside and outside simultaneously, until the Pioneer took shape. It became such a success that Jerry and Anniek decided to turn it into a company: Land Roamer.
Jerry Zomer
Jerry designs the cabins down to the last detail, from first sketch to finished 3D drawing. By trade he’s an architectural draftsman; that background in space and construction shows in everything he makes.
Anniek de Jager
Anniek is involved in every stage, from material choices to the final finishing touches, and makes sure the result feels as good as it works. In everyday life she’s a PhD candidate in medicine; the moment she’s free, she’d rather be out on the road with Jerry, their dog Mayla, and the camper.
PHILOSOPHY
A warm little home, without compromising on terrain
Land Roamer should feel like a warm home, with every possible bit of luxury within reach — without ever compromising the 4×4 driving characteristics of the base vehicle. Being able to go anywhere a pickup with a roof tent and full overland gear can, but with your own cosy space along for the ride.
That only works by designing the inside and outside at the same time. The shape of the cabin was designed around the interior that had to fit inside it, and in turn the interior was designed around the dimensions of the vehicle. That’s how the cabin stays exactly as wide as the base vehicle, keeps the centre of gravity low and between the axles, and keeps its balance while driving.
DEVELOPMENT & TESTING
Almost 5 years of testing, from prototype to Pioneer
The current design is the result of countless prototypes and extensive testing: on unpaved roads, at adventure and enduro parks, and over long distances on the road.
The ultimate test was a 13-month journey through South America. From minus 10°C to 40°C, river crossings, beaches, salt flats, desert and endless washboard roads: the Pioneer came through it all.
